About China Mythica

China Mythica is a bilingual guide to the creatures, gods and spirits of Chinese mythology. Every entry starts from the original classical text, not from retellings.

How we work

Classical quotations are taken from public-domain editions on Chinese Wikisource and linked to their chapter. We never invent quotations. English translations are our own.

Images come from Wikimedia Commons. Each caption gives the artist or source and the license. Most are public-domain woodblock prints from the Gujin Tushu Jicheng (1700–1725).
